The Ravning Bridge, Vejle

The Ravning Bridge, Vejle

An old Viking bridge over the bog.

The Ravning Bridge is an old Viking bridge that crossed a large marsh area. The bridge was built in 980 by King Harald Blåtand. It was 760 meters long and 5 meters wide.

An extensive archaeological excavation of the bridge was made in 1972 and when the bog was simultaneously drained to provide agricultural land, the entire bridge was subsequently covered with soil. The soil makes the tree not dry out and rot. So the bridge is preserved for posterity.

At each end there is a full-size reconstruction of how the bridge looked and was built. Unfortunately, it is not possible to go down on the real bridge, instead you can walk on the elevation of the earth and feel like a viking with shield and sword. For the bridge is just below.

Some of the posts are dug up and exhibited.

The bridge was part of a road, which also found traces in the forests to the south and north. The bridge was only used for less than 100 years. Why does nobody know, but it may well be lack of desire, craftsmanship or money that made the bridge not be maintained and decayed. Instead, a number of waders were established over the bog.

It was or good people who built the bridge. Traces of land surveying sticks and tree legs have been found to lower the posts into the bog.

They lowered 1700 oak posts of 30x30 centimeters down into the bog to make the foundation. By means of a wooden leg (as an Indian tent), the post was raised vertically and at its own weight it sank into the bog until it came on firm ground.

Cross braces were then placed obliquely between two posts so that they did not twist sideways. On top of the posts were laid 3 layers of timber across and finally half a meter wide planks along which constituted the driving layer. The bridge had a total area of about 3,800 m2.

The bridge lies down in a valley and there are good parking conditions, garbage bins and tables for eating the packed lunch. There are also some info boards that show the bridges history.

We were there on a summer day and the atmosphere was amazing, which is incredibly high to the sky and there is a beautiful view of the flat old meadow landscape.

It was first excavated in 1832, but it went terrible wrong when one of the big cover stones in the ceiling fell down. There were two men inside the chamber, who just and hardly escaped.

Next attempt was made in 1940, where everything went as it should. The megalithic grave was restored and is still beautiful and there are probably no more stones falling down.
